How to Extend the Life of Your Shoes

How to Extend the Life of Your Shoes

Good shoes are a big investment so make sure to maintain them for the longest wear possible. Most shoes don't ever get to the worn out phase. They are ruined by lack of care long before then. Here are some tips to keeping them looking good until they wear out from actually wearing them.

Things You'll Need:

Cedar shoe trees

Shoe boxes

Shoe racks

Polishes

Silicone spray

Step
1

Keep your shoes clean. Nothing wears out a dress or casual shoe faster than putting them away dirty. Use a soft brush to dislodge any dirt or debris and wipe dust off with a soft cloth.

Step
2

Keep shoes polished. Scuff marks will not come off easily when shoes are allowed to sit before cleaning. Polish shoes with a creme polish that matches the shoe for best results. Buff with a soft cloth after drying. If shoes have wooden heels, polish them with orange or lemon oil and wipe off.

Step
3

Spray new canvas shoes with silicone and then clean shoes and respray every two months for daily wear or every three to six months for more infrequent wear. Never spray dirty shoes!

Step
4

Protect patent leather with
petroleum
jelly

or castor oil. Apply a light coating and buff it lightly.

Step
5

Protect expensive leather soled shoes by having a shoe doctor add a thin protective rubber sole to them. If you have dancing shoes that are hard soled, adding taps, if appropriate, make tips and heels nearly indestructible. Metal tips on boots save on wear and tear as well.

Step
6

Clean wet or muddy shoes immediately when you get home. Rinse them in cold water if they get salty, muddy or wet. Let shoes dry for a good while on shoes
trees
or at least stuff them with newspapers so that they maintain their shape.

Step
7

If your pricey shoes look great everywhere but on the soles, have new soles put on them. You'll get twice the wear out of them by spending much less than the price of a new pair.

Step
8

Store your nicer shoes in plastic or shoe store boxes. They will stay dust free and they won't get scuffed or scratched up by being thrown on the closet floor. For very expensive shoes, put shoes on a cedar shoe tree to maintain their shape perfectly and give them a nice clean smell.

Step
9

Air shoes out between wearings. Human feet normally give off moisture so alternate pairs so that the insides can dry out completely between uses. Maintain your shoes properly and they will last for years.
